(Laura Dern and Alan Alda rightfully earned praise for their parts, but Ray Liotta's gruff divorce expert deserves his own spin-off.) In showing how divorce ripples outward, Marriage Story complicates its own simple premise as it progresses.

Like his 2005 film The Squid and the Whale, writer/director Noah Baumbach again finds laughter and pain in the often excruciating personal details of ending a relationship.
